Our highest goal is to promote lifelong dental health and wellness for every one of our patients. One of the most important steps toward that goal is making sure patients are completely comfortable during every visit to our office.

Our highly experienced and trained team members are skilled in techniques that fully relax patients before and during visits. These options are perfect for patients with dental anxiety, dental phobias or general apprehension. Relaxation dentistry also assists with long procedures or the need for multiple procedures during a single visit. Relaxation dentistry utilizes the most current and safe techniques, including:

  • Nitrous oxide.
  • Pre-visit sedative medications to ease apprehension.
  • Conscious sedation medication – no injections required!

Dr. Cohen and his team offer relaxation dentistry for many procedures including:

  • Exams and digital radiographs
  • Crowns, bridges and veneers
  • Root canal therapy
  • Cosmetic and restorative dentistry including bleaching and bonding white fillings
  • Periodontal care including deep cleaning, scaling and surgery
  • Oral surgery and extractions.

Six Steps to A Calm, Relaxing Visit

Curious about how relaxation dentistry works? There are typically six steps to a comfortable visit:

  1. Make your appointment. We know this may be a difficult step so we keep it simple, asking just a few basic questions to understand your dental care needs. We’ll also take as much time as necessary to answer any questions.
  1. Come for a welcome visit. We will take a health history; providing a complete health history is important, including medications, vitamins and supplements. As your health history can affect both before and after care, it is very important to let us know about any medical conditions or changes in health status. Smoking and alcohol can affect relaxation medications, too, so please let us know about these practices. We also will talk about your experiences, fears and concerns, oral care needs and what you would like to achieve. We will explain how oral sedation works, which will increase your feeling of control and comfort regarding your dental care. No one on our team will ever be judgmental.
  1. Prepare for a tension-free visit. You will receive a prescription for a sedative to take the night before your first appointment, for a restful night that will allow you to wake up relaxed. Remember, you must not eat or drink for six hours prior to your appointment, unless Dr. Cohen directs you to do so. Also, please arrange to have a companion bring you to your appointment and drive you home.
  1. Visit the office for your treatment. Upon arrival, you will receive medication to create complete relaxation. Oral sedation does not require the use of injections. The medication can be swallowed whole or crushed and administered under the tongue by Dr. Cohen. These methods and medications are very effective and have been safely in use for decades.
  1. Relax completely during treatment. Relaxation dentistry methods and medications allow you to experience dental procedures differently than ever before. Our patients find that hours pass like minutes. Some medications result in little or no memory of your time in the dental chair. Often, more dentistry can be performed in a single visit because we are able to provide treatment so effectively. Our highly trained and experienced sedation team will monitor you throughout the entire visit.
  1. Recover in comfort. After your procedure, you will recover in our office until you feel ready to return home. Our office will give you and your companion thorough after-care instructions. For instance, it is important to stay hydrated with plenty of fluids after your procedure, and to refrain from driving a vehicle or operating machinery for 24 hours.
